Cheng Xin Rui’s Experience (Facilitator) [he/him]
I think the best part about facilitating the Work on The Self Programme is to be able to see how each batch of individuals are different. It was a wonderful experience working with a different group of people, and watching them learn and grow, even as I do the same. To watch their scores develop, and the ways in which they explore movement and their own memories is a fascinating experience, and one that I am deeply grateful for.
Taking a more involved approach this time as a facilitator, I found myself exploring alongside the participants. I had given up, or rather, resigned to not knowing their personal stories and somehow, that opened up more paths. I found myself better able to relate to the participants, better able to move alongside them.
I still have my struggles as a facilitator: I’m still developing my ability to observe participants, and discovering the lines between invitation and disruption. I have my own views on where the line is, but at times it works to my detriment. I still struggle with my own confidence and assertiveness, as I am accustomed to deferring to authority, but that is slowly peeling away.
In time, I hope that I am able to accompany more participants as they go along this route, and witness their growth even as I myself am developing as a performer, a facilitator, and most importantly, a human being.
